This section describes only the Metrics tab within the Action Area of the Energy Management Service.
It covers all functions, states, rules, and UI elements related to metrics and metering points.

Purpose of the Metrics Tab

The Metrics tab is used to:

  • import data streams and variables into the Energy Management Service
  • create and structure metering points
  • logically assign metrics
  • automatically build aggregations

All widgets, calculations, reports, and alerts are based on the metering points and metrics defined here.

Basic Structure of the Metrics Tab

The Metrics tab consists of:

  • a “Filter Metrics” input field at the top
  • a plus icon to the right of the filter field
  • a lock icon to enable editing of the tree view
  • the tree view, containing:
  • Metric Inbox
  • Metering Points
  • Submetering Points
  • Metrics

Filter Metrics

Functionality

In the “Filter Metrics” text field, users can enter search text.

  • Filtering happens instantly while typing
  • The filter applies to:
  • metric names
  • associated metering points

Selecting a Filter Result

When a user clicks on a result:

  • the corresponding metering point is automatically expanded
  • the metric is highlighted in blue

This enables fast navigation within complex metering structures.

Plus Icon in the Metrics Tab

Position and Function

To the right of the filter field is a plus icon.

Clicking it opens a menu with the following options:

  • New Metering Point
  • Add Metrics

New Metering Point

When New Metering Point is selected:

  • a new metering point is created in the tree view
  • its initial name is “Metering Point”
  • the name is not editable initially

To rename it, the lock icon must be opened.

Add Metrics

When Add Metrics is selected:

  • a metric selection dialog opens
  • selected metrics are initially placed in the Metric Inbox

Lock Icon and Edit Mode

Locked State

When the lock is closed:

  • the tree view is read-only
  • renaming is not possible
  • drag and drop is disabled

Unlocked State

When the lock is open and highlighted:

  • metering points can be renamed
  • metrics can be moved
  • submetering points can be structured

All changes are saved immediately.

Metric Inbox

Purpose

The Metric Inbox is a temporary holding area for imported metrics.

  • metrics in the inbox are not yet assigned to a metering point
  • data is only persisted once a metric is assigned to a metering point

Behavior

  • metrics can be moved from the inbox using drag and drop
  • this requires the lock icon to be unlocked

Importing Metrics

Source Selection

In the Add Metrics dialog, users can choose between:

  • Device Management Service
  • CSV file

Import from Device Management Service

When this option is selected:

  • a list of all available devices is displayed
  • available metrics are shown under each device

Users can:

  • select an entire device
  • or select individual metrics

Metric Definition

When an individual metric is selected:

  • a unit must be defined
  • examples include:
  • Energy
  • Total
  • Kilowatt-hour

Optionally, the energy type can be defined:

  • electric
  • gas
  • heat
  • cooling

Confirming the Import

Clicking Import:

  • imports all selected metrics
  • metrics appear:
  • either in the Metric Inbox
  • or directly in a metering point, if added there

Metering Points

Basic Principle

Metering points are logical measurement points.

  • There is no limitation on:
  • the number of metering points
  • the depth of the hierarchy

Naming and Icon

A circle icon is displayed to the left of the metering point name.

Clicking the circle allows:

  • selection of an icon
  • selection of a color

Adding Metrics Directly to a Metering Point

To the right of a metering point, a petrol-colored dashboard icon with a plus symbol is shown.

Clicking it:

  • opens the Add Metrics dialog
  • assigns the metric directly to the metering point
  • bypasses the Metric Inbox

Three-Dot Menu on Metering Points

Via the three-dot menu, users can:

  • add metrics
  • create child metering points
  • set a location
  • delete the metering point

Hierarchy and Arrows

Arrow States

To the left of the metering point icon is an arrow.

  • gray arrow: no child elements
  • black arrow: child metering points exist

Clicking the arrow:

  • expands or collapses the child elements

Rules for Metrics within Metering Points

  • the same metric with the same unit:
  • cannot exist twice within the same metering point
  • the same metric:
  • is allowed in different submetering points

Aggregations

In higher-level metering points:

  • metrics with the same unit are automatically aggregated

These aggregations:

  • are system-generated
  • are displayed with a gray background
  • are marked with an aggregation icon

Metric Identification

  • User-defined metrics:
  • white background
  • bar chart icon on the left
  • System metrics:
  • gray background
  • aggregation icon on the left

Display of Metric Count

  • Metering point without metrics:
  • petrol-colored plus icon
  • Metering point with metrics:
  • dashboard icon with a number
  • the number represents the total count of contained metrics
  • submetering points are included in this count

Expanding Metrics

To the right of the metric count is an arrow.

Clicking it:

  • displays all contained metrics

Editing Individual Metrics

Within a metering point, a metric can be:

  • renamed
  • enriched with historical data

Historical data can originate from:

  • CSV files
  • other devices

This is particularly relevant for system migrations.
